If you were to log onto eBay right now, I would just about bet you that you can find pretty much anything that your craziest imagination could produce - within reason. The point is that there are so many different things you could sell on eBay, that you could spend days, weeks or months looking for the perfect type of products to sell to your customers.
So let's take just a few minutes here to help you make some educated decisions on what is appropriate and in harmony with the goals and nature of your business. If you intend to go on eBay and start selling whatever sells to the masses, then you need to step back and realize that the products that sell in large volumes are naturally dominated by the MUCH more established sellers who own several eBay Anchor stores.
I do not want to discourage you or deter you from going after selling iPods or mp3 players, or whatever the hottest item is, but you need to be aware just how very competitive selling on eBay actually is.
If you have a brick and mortar store that sells shoes and you want to dip into the online marketplace , there are a few questions you will need answers to get us in order to determine what to sell.
Start by asking yourself:
What do I think I can sell?
What do I have that is unique or unusual on eBay?
How do I find a smaller niche to sell my items?
Who are my customers?
How much money do I need to invest?
Experiential knowledge of your own items will give you a better understanding. It could be something like a profession that you are in, a hobby that you enjoy, or even something that you learn about consistently.
So, let's go with the shoes example, just to demonstrate. Shoes are a large category on eBay so we need to be a little more specific and pick the brand and colors that sell. If you wish to see if there are trends in your particular brand of shoe, go to:
http://new-pulse.ebay.com
This will give you snapshot of what keywords are being searched and how many searches there are for them. That also to each each individual category for eBay - not just in general. If you go onto that website you can start to get a feel for what is selling in your niche.

It's no secret that eBay loves the big players. After all, they are trying to make money like everyone else. While this does result in them being a little harder on new sellers, it all boils down to you needing to be at least somewhat savvy when it comes to standing out from your competitors.
You can attach your eBay store to other mediums. If there is a hot topic or movie, post it on Facebook and get buyers attention that way.
You really need to stay informed on the topics that are relevant to your business. Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds there are plenty of ways to stay informed.
Here are a few websites where you might like to sign up to their RSS feeds:

That's exactly what the big boys do on eBay and it's what
keeps them at the top of the game.
If you don`t keep current with new products that are coming out or what is happening in the news, you may find yourself becoming frustrated when the items that you list will have seen their peak and sales fade.
You can also sell second hand goods. The garage sale business is still booming.
Recessions and economic fluxes result in many opportunities. It's how eBay began in the first place!
Outside of the box is where the real money is made. If you just stick to selling what everyone else is selling, then it can prove to be fruitless. If you do exactly the opposite, you might find that there is money to be made.
If you want a comprehensive guide on the right products to choose, and the best methods to promote them on eBay, I highly recommend you check out one or both of these sites:

Both of these sites teach you what to sell, how to sell it and the secrets to turning your hobby into a fully-fledged business. If you've ever wanted to know everything from the basics to what sets Powersellers apart, you'll learn it here.
